Med spas can feel a little intimidating if you have never been. There is an assumption that you are supposed to walk in already knowing what you want, what the treatments do, and how the whole thing works.
You are not. A good med spa is designed for people who have questions, and the right practice will spend real time answering them before anyone touches your face.
Here is everything you need to know to walk into your first Myrtle Beach med spa appointment feeling prepared and comfortable.
What Happens at a Consultation
If you book a consultation before a treatment, expect a conversation. Your provider will ask what is bothering you, look at your skin and the areas you want to address, ask about your medical history and any medications you take, and explain what options are available for your concerns.
You will get an honest recommendation, not a sales pitch for the most expensive treatment on the menu.
At our practice, consultations are complimentary. There is no obligation to book anything at the end of it.
We understand that decisions about your appearance are personal, and that a little time to think is sometimes exactly what you need before you commit.
Come with photos if you have them: reference images of results you like, or photos of yourself that show the concerns you want to address. "I want to look more like this photo of myself from five years ago" is genuinely useful clinical information.
What to Do Before Your Appointment
The prep instructions vary by treatment, but here are the most common things that apply across the board:
- Avoid blood thinners 5 to 7 days before injectables: This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol. These increase bruising risk. Check with your provider if you take prescription blood thinners.
- Avoid retinoids and active acids before resurfacing treatments: Stop retinol, tretinoin, AHAs, and BHAs 3 to 5 days before chemical peels, microneedling, or laser treatments, as they can increase sensitivity.
- Avoid sun exposure: Tanned or sunburned skin is not safe for most laser and light treatments. Come in with your baseline skin tone, not a fresh beach tan.
- Come with a clean face: For facials and skin treatments, arrive without makeup. For injectable appointments, light makeup is fine since the area will be cleaned before treatment.
- Disclose your medications and history: Certain medications (including some antibiotics) can cause photosensitivity. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, autoimmune conditions, and recent cosmetic procedures are all important for your provider to know about.
What Happens During Treatment
For most treatments, your provider will cleanse the skin, apply a topical numbing cream if needed (for microneedling, laser treatments, or injectable-heavy sessions), and then perform the treatment. You will typically be lying in a treatment chair or bed.
You are encouraged to ask questions during the process. If something feels unexpectedly uncomfortable, say so.
Providers can adjust technique, pressure, or pacing. The goal is for you to feel informed and comfortable, not just quietly patient.
Most treatments take between 20 and 60 minutes. HydraFacial and dermaplaning run about 30 to 45 minutes.
Botox takes about 15 minutes. Microneedling with prep and numbing can take about 60 to 90 minutes total.
Aftercare: What to Watch For
After treatment, your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions for what you had done. Some general rules:
- Do not apply makeup for at least 24 hours after microneedling, laser treatments, or chemical peels.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF 30+ daily after any skin treatment, especially during the first two weeks.
- Do not exercise or do anything that raises body temperature significantly for 24 hours after injectables (Botox, fillers, Kybella).
- Do not manipulate, massage, or press on treated areas unless specifically instructed to do so.
- Mild redness, swelling, or tenderness after most treatments is normal and expected. It is not a sign something went wrong.
- Contact the practice if you experience unusual pain, significant asymmetry, or anything that feels wrong to you. Do not google symptoms and wait three days. Call.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Treatments
One treatment usually produces a noticeable improvement. A consistent, thoughtful plan produces transformation. The patients who see the best long-term results are the ones who:
- Do a series when a series is recommended, rather than stopping after one session and wondering why results are not dramatic
- Maintain results with appropriate maintenance appointments (Botox every 3 to 4 months, HydraFacial every 4 to 6 weeks for maintenance, etc.)
- Build a home skincare routine that supports their in-office treatments (SPF is non-negotiable; a good cleanser and moisturizer make a real difference)
- Communicate openly with their provider about what they are seeing, what they like, and what they want to improve next
You do not need to do everything at once. Start with the treatment that addresses your most pressing concern, see how you respond, and build from there. The complete treatment guide is a good reference if you want to understand what options are available before you decide where to start.
